PAVONES- Pavones is the main attraction to the entire area and what drives the local economy and has one of the world's best and longest left hand waves. A surf mecca for the world in its most pristine and rustic conditions. It's hard to get to Pavones as the dirt roads are usually in dire conditions but once here you can experience Pavones Point and the "Left Wave". Surfing is not the only attraction that brings people to the area. The local river, Rio Claro, is one of the cleanest and clearest rivers in Costa Rica, tourists and locals alike spend countless hours refreshing themselves in it. The natural beauty of Pavones is also a driver in the economy here as we have some of the most diverse wildlife in the world. Easily observable are Scarlett Macaws, Toucans, Sloths, Anteaters.... You name it and if it's in Costa Rica it's probably in Pavones.

CUERVITO- About 20-30 minutes before you get to Pavones you will most likely travel through our small mountains of about 1000-1500 ft of elevation. At the ridge of this mountain you have the small town of Cuervito. Many of the homes in Cuervito have ocean views from the tops of the ridges. We personally love Cuervito as it's extremely tranquil and even more full of wildlife than Pavones. The weather is also a bit cooler at the top of the small mountains in Cuervito(about 3-4 degrees Fahrenheit). The overall weather in the area is fairly cool considering we are almost at the equator. I lived in Florida a good part of my life and the Costa Rican summer, which is opposite of the US even though its on the same hemisphere, feels about as hot as a Florida summer. However during the "winter" which is actually the wet season, the weather here is cooler than south and central Florida in the summer due to the cloud coverage. Not to worry, as you can purchase a home here with or without AC and the ones that don't have one can easily be retrofitted with a split system (I owned a licensed construction company in Florida and have the connections here to make any remodel project happen quickly). In Cuervito on the ridges you can have really good cell phone reception and high speed internet services, however unless you are near the main road it will be through a satellite dish.

Pilon- Pilon is the first beach town you get to when you come down from the mountains of Cuervito and it's only a 15 minute drive from Pavones (it's a small distance but you must drive slow due to the dirt roads). Pilon is one of my favorite beaches and has several surf spots including Main Pilon Point which is almost as good as Pavones Point. However not as many people know abut it so less people surf it. The wave at Pilon is a bit more diminished than at Pavones Point but you still get some very good surf when the swell hits from the right angle. Pilon has many homes right on the water were you can walk directly from your house to the beach. A lot of the homes in Pilon are owned by ex-pats and have that American style and feel to them. One of the main reasons I like Pilon is because it is protected since it's in the Golfo Dulce so in certain locations the waves at the beach are small enough for children to play in like my 6 year old son and 8 year old daughter.

Punta Banco- This town is very rustic and has some of the most beautiful Costa Rican beaches. It's directly on the Pacific ocean and not protected by Golfo Dulce so when the swells are big Punta Banco gets gnarly. (Yes, it's bigger than Pavones Point). The properties in Punta Banco are somewhat cheaper than Pavones and it may be because unless you are right at the beach you probably won't have any internet or cell phone service. Punta Banco is not wired for internet nor are there any cell phone towers, so the only place to have reception or internet is at the beach or mountain tops (there are cell towers across Golfo Dulce that reach the beach). Punta Banco has some of the best wildlife viewing in the whole country. Take a horse tour through my friend Jonny's finca and through the beach while watching waterfalls and exotic birds.
